Promoting a Transparent Government
The Northern Border Regional Commission is committed to accountability as we provide an effective mechanism for federal investments in the Northern Border region. We continually strive to improve our performance and cut waste so that our job creation and community investments have the maximum impact. An open, transparent, and accountable government is essential. The Northern Border Regional Commission strives to provide data on projects, it's internal accountability, the process that is used to determine awards, and to receive feedback from the public.
Annual Reports
As required by statute - and as a good practice - the NBRC submits an Annual Report to Congress and the general public summarizing the prevous year's activities and accomplishments.
Congressional Justification
Budget Justification Reports are submitted to Congress before each fiscal year to identify the projected expenses and investments made by the NBRC.
Assessing Distress in NBRC Counties
By statute, the Commission is required to annually assess the level of economic and demographic distress among the counties in its service area. Assessing distress is important as the resulting designations reflect whether or not the Commission can provide grants within a county as well as what level of match is required of Commission funded projects.
Freedom of Information Act
Since 1967, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has provided the public the right to request access to records from any federal agency. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. Federal agencies, including the NBRC Federal-State partnership, are required to disclose any information requested under the FOIA unless it falls under one of nine exemptions which protect interests such as personal privacy, national security, and law enforcement.
Northern Border Regional Commission Lapse Plan
The following plan is to be initiated in the event of a lapse of government appropriations.
The NBRC is a "no-year" funded agency and, specifically, its appropriations "remain available until expended," enabling the NBRC to continue operations in the event of a lapse in government appropriations.
